The Eric Franklin workshops at Pilates People on October 11, 2009 were a huge success!!
Thank You to all who attended. We hope to host again next year!
Internationally renowned movement educator and author of several books on movement imagery and conditioning methods. Through his use of imagery, Eric Frankln will help us to understand how to relate proper movement and thus better function to our clients.
The Franklin Method teaches you the know-how to make the most out of the body/mind continuum in a practical and hands on manner. We address the mind through the use of imagery in all its applications and we address the body by teaching you how it is designed to function. You may think "oh my god more things to put into my head" but consider the following. There are 3 things you always do as a human:
- You relate to gravity in posture and movement
- You breathe
- You use your brain to think and dream.
Eric Franklin teaches the practical elements of body design, emphasizing imagery for maximum efficiency. Body posture and movement are imagery driven, and if the image doesn't correspond to the way the body is designed, the result will be a steady decline in function. By contrast, the best way to improve function is to start with an image that corresponds to how the body is designed.
The Franklin Method is cutting edge among movement professionals, used and acclaimed by The Royal Ballet School London, the Juilliard School of Arts New York, the Music Conservatory of Vienna, world-class athletes and dancers. They are also a mainstay for practitioners of Pilates, Yoga, fitness and physical therapy.

Course Description: Osteoporosis is epidemic in the United States. The statistics are staggering; one in every two women and one in every four men aged 50 and over will suffer a fracture of the hip, spine or wrist during their lives due to osteoporosis, (National Osteoporosis Foundation 2005). It is imperative that ALL fitness professionals understand the risks and contraindications of working with this population of people. This course is intended for Pilates and fitness professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge of how to effectively and safely work with a population of people who are at risk for fracture. Participants will learn what osteoporosis is, how it is diagnosed, and who is at risk. The indications and contraindications for exercise and osteoporosis will be reviewed, and suggestions on how to effectively progress a program that will not put clients at greater risk for fracture and will in fact improve chances against future fracture. Instructor: Doreen Hall, PT
Objectives: Course participants will be able to
- Define osteoporosis and osteopenia and understand the complexity of bone.
- Demonstrate understanding of risk factors for osteoporosis
- Understand diagnosis and screening processes for osteoporosis
- Be able to effectively screen clients at risk for fracture
- Review current research on exercise and osteoporosis
- Develop and effectively carry out safe exercise programs using the Pilates equipment with clients who have osteoporosis or osteopenia

Cost: $150
Course Description: The key to creating joint and spine stability is to create a dynamically stable pelvis. Much research in the last decade has led us to a greater understanding of the roles of the deep stabilizing musculature of the spine and pelvis. For optimum function we require coordinated recruitment of the deep stabilizing muscles and just the right balance in recruitment of the more superficial musculature. This one day course is designed for Pilates and fitness professionals to gain a better understanding of the structure and function of the pelvis and its relationship to the spine and to the peripheral joints. We will cover anatomy and biomechanics of the pelvis, including strategies for teaching clients how to recruit the deep stabilizing layer of musculature. We will cover the importance of posture and the neutral lumbopelvic curve. We will discuss indications and contra-indications for exercises and lead a lab discussion with exercises on the Pilates equipment. Instructors: Doreen Hall, PT
Objectives: Course participants will be able to
- Demonstrate understanding of the functional anatomy and biomechanics of the pelvis.
- Describe local vs. global stabilization
- Describe their role of the pelvis in spine and peripheral joint stability
- Demonstrate ability to teach core activation/pelvic stability
- Assess clients and be able to design appropriate exercise programs and progressions
- Demonstrate use and understanding of modifications of Pilates repertoire for the client who lacks optimal core control
Agenda: 8:00 - Registration and introductions 8:30 - Anatomy of the pelvis and related joints 9:30 - Discussion of local vs global stabilization 10:00 - Break 10:15 - Biomechanics of the pelvis and hips (lab) 11:15 - Activating core stabilizers (lab) 12:30 - Break for lunch 1:30 - Indication and contra-indications for exercise 2:00 - Stabilization/exercise progressions (lab) 3:45 - Break 4:00 - Pilates fundamentals 5:00 - Q&A 5:30 - Adjourn
Cost: $150 (early -birds registering by May 3, 2008) $175 (if registered after May 3, 2007)

Course Description: Pregnancy, labor and delivery create many changes in a woman’s body – some slowly over several months, and some acutely due to trauma during labor and delivery. This 2-day workshop is designed for Pilates instructors and other fitness professionals who wish to gain a better understanding of how to guide their pregnant and post-partum clients through a safe and effective exercise program. During the first day, participants will review the anatomy of the pelvis, including proper recruitment of its stabilizers (pelvic floor, deep abdominals, multifidi and diaphragm), and how it is affected through pregnancy and post-partum (see course description for: Understanding the Pelvis).
The second day will offer insight into identifying postural changes and muscular imbalances that take place in the pregnant body, and how to design specific programs to address these issues. In addition, because the body continues to experience changes post-partum, participants will learn how to safely help their clients re-connect with their core and re-train their pelvic floor and deep abdominals. Contraindications will be reviewed and specific Pilates exercises will be demonstrated on the Cadillac, Reformer and Chair that are consistent with the ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) guidelines for exercise during pregnancy. Instructors: Doreen Hall, P.T.
* Day one of the weekend, Understanding the Pelvis, may be registered for separately and taken as a stand-alone workshop. However, it is a pre-requisite for Day two, Pilates During Pregnancy.
Objectives: Course participants will be able to
- Identify the major stages and changes through pregnancy and post-partum
- Understand the ACOG guidelines and how to integrate them into a Pilates program
- Identify and monitor diastasis recti
- Teach safe abdominal strengthening exercises for pre-natal and post-partum clients
- Educate the client regarding problems associated with pregnancy
- Encourage increased body awareness through proprioceptive exercises
- Teach safe abdominal strengthening exercises for pre-natal and post-partum clients
- Teach strengthening exercises of the lower and upper extremities for increased load and in preparation for infant care.
- Teach breathing and relaxation techniques.
Agenda: 8:00 - Registration and introductions 8:30 - Anatomy review 9:30 - Discussion of anatomical, physiological and emotional changes during pregnancy and post-partum 10:30 - Break 10:45 - Precautions to exercise, potential problems, and indications and contra-indications 12:30 - Break for lunch 1:30 - Pilates exercise/progressions on the mat and equipment (lab) 3:00 - Break 3:15 - Practice 4:30 - Q&A 5:00 - Adjourn
Cost: Day one: The Pelvis $150 (early birds registering by May 3, 2008) $175 (if registered after May 3, 2008)
Day one & two: The Pelvis & Pilates During Pregnancy $300 (early birds registering by May 3, 2008) $350 (if registered after May 3, 2008)
